AspisOSThis flavor is targeted for SBCs (Single Board Computers) or dedicated desktop PCs that function as Wireless Access Points/Routers. It's optimized for size and security.

The design principles of this flavor are:

Minimal requirements
AspisOS needs only 8MB to provide a multitude of services and functionality. There is also an 16MB version for those cases that the 8MB image is insufficient.

Feature rich
AspisOS has a wealth of software included in 8MB of CF image. This allows it to serve multiple purposes, avoiding the need for additional network devices. For instance, it houses all the necessary components for secure wireless networking: SHTTP Server, Supplicant/Authenticator/RADIUS, Firewall, WIDS & Hotspot.

At this point, AspisOS has the following features/functionality:

  • Router:
    • Static/Dynamic routing. IPv4 and Ipv6.
    • Dynamic routing protocols supported:
    • BGP, RIP, OSPF, ISIS
  • NAT/Port-forwarding
  • Statefull and Stateless firewall.
  • DHCP server/client/relay.
  • DNS forwarder.
  • 801.X Supplicant/Authenticator/RADIUS Authentication Server.
  • ADSL gateway (PPPoE/PPPoA).
  • Web server with cgi support, ssl.
  • IP-layer QoS.
  • Hidden node problem workaround.
  • SNMP agent.
  • Dynamic DNS.
  • SMTP client.
  • Network security penetration/testing:
    • nmap, tcptraceroute, ngrep, hping, ..
  • Network statistics:
    • vnstat.
  • And many other not mentioned here

Security-Oriented
AspisOS -if well configured- provides a very good security both for itself and the network that serves. Furthermore, it contains a lot of security-related software, in order to test security of the surrounding network.

There is a trade-off for the enhanced security that AspisOS provides: Since it does not feature a Management System, it requires pretty good familiarity with linux to set it up. This fact, might render a misconfigured AspisOS-box less secure than a Well-configured non-security-oriented alternative.

But even with the default configuration, AspisOS is far more secure that any other OS for embedded devices on earth. That's our slogan ;).

Modularized Architecture
AspisOS' images have only a minimal functionality at first, but it can be extended with the installation of addons. There are addons for various things, like Dynamic Routing, Debugging, Bridging and so on. More chances are that you will find what you need amongst the numerous addons that ship together with AspisOS.

Sophisticated Development Environment
But even if you don't find a feature or a package that you want in AspisOS, it's extremely easy to add it yourself. This is due to AspisOS' versatile development environment, which is based on buildroot, but heavily modified to fit AspisOS' needs.

It's readily possible to affect how every singe package is compiled and how the whole system is composed. It is strongly advised to read the documentation targeted to developers, if you are going to work with the development environment of AspisOS.
